Sustainably inspired by Cape Verde
What matters to the people of the Cape Verde Islands? Far from the reality of our life, we embarked on a journey to the archipelago off the coast of West Africa. Thanks to the warm welcome by the family of my respected friend and project partner Calvin Middel, it was easy for us to fit into the everyday life of the country. His remarkable commitment, determination and creativity were crucial to this project. Observations and conversations brought us new, exciting perspectives that inspire us still today. They led us to our project, which addresses the needs of people, as well as domestic resources and their use. In the process, we stumbled upon a hidden gem: bagasse, a natural byproduct of the sugar cane industry, is taking on new value and manifesting the country’s culinary experience. A sustainable transformation in which waste is reduced and local, renewable resources are promoted.
