funghi furniture — disposable chair

Furniture between comfort and ecological responsibility

In times of throwaway mentality and pressboard furniture, in which a piece of furniture is no longer designed for eternity and does not even survive a move, it is time to rethink and to counteract the constant littering with an actually well-known approach: the circular economy. In my project I deal with the topic of compostable furniture and investigate potential advantages but also challenges in this context. As a biobased material for this project, I have chosen mycelium. The fibrous root system of fungi, whose characteristics have been analysed under the aspect of being a potential building material since the early 2000s, has proven to be a promising material ‒ especially in architecture. My project explores the possible fields of use of this material for furniture in interiors and deals with the idea of owning things only temporarily. In the tension between permanence and impermanence, I try to find a compromise between comfort and ecological responsibility.
