Bachelor Media Design

During my studies, I specialized in 2D animation, learning in particular about the conception and implementation of emotional media communication. My focus lies on the entertaining presentation of information in explanatory films. I am inspired by YouTube formats such as “Simplicissimus” and “Kurzgesagt”.

Who is Theo?

A biographical animated film

In my film project “Who is Theo?” my mother tells of a shocking discovery: her grandfather Theo, of whom she knew only a few stories, turns out to be a perpetrator of the Nazi regime who ordered the murder of thousands of people. This revelation takes her on a journey into the entire family’s past and challenges her own identity.

To emphasize the personal touch of the film, I chose to use hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation. The style is deliberately sketchy and incomplete to show the fractures and imperfections of the memories.

I originally had several concepts for the film, but after attending the book reading by Jennifer Teege, another person from a perpetrator’s family, I realized that the connection to my own family and the resulting emotionality had to be an important part of the film. My mother’s narrative expresses these feelings from the present-day perspective of a person from the third generation of a family of perpetrators.
