As a designer I always want to be aware and be able to reflect on my work. Studying helped me to trust in my own abilities and made me realise that I’m capable of doing so much more than I supposed to right at the beginning of my studies. I’d like to express my gratitude to my dear friends, who always supported me and inspire me even now.

AlaAla

Life of a filipino worker from overseas

AlaAla is a fictional collection of memories and experiences from Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW). It is inspired by my own family and OFW’s real experiences.

With this project I want to honor my family and real OFWs, their hard work and the sacrifices they’ve made in order to support their relatives. I want to show how they’ve taken care of their families to this day, when their own country couldn’t. I want to showcase why OFWs even exist and portrait their experiences: cultural differences and shocks, tears, joy, coming home and much more.

During this project I talked a lot with my family and asked them about their childhood, their favorite memories, as well as their struggles living and working in a new country. I’m very thankful for the insights they shared with me thanks to this project.
